ByWordOfWeb.com launches villageTell.org to help bring affordable communications to the poor through the Village Phone Program established by the Grameen Foundation.

villageTell cofounders James Price and Dan Cozart will be traveling to Sierra Leone in February 2008 to launch a Village Phone pilot program with Dr. Kojo Carew, Medical and Managing Director of Blue Shield Hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The pilot program is designed to help bring cell phone communications to the rural poor that live on less than US $2 per day.

Owning a cell phone is one of the 3 most significant unmet needs of the poor, according to a study of the World Resources Institute, and can help save the poor time and money. Studies have shown that there is a cost to not making a call – which can be up to eight times more expensive than the cost of the actual phone call. More…
